Student development continues to be of interest to me as I move in and out of students lives on two levels. This provides two very different perspectives. As an instructor, I build relationships based from the academic standpoint. As the housing overseer, I am able to observe their lives and choices from their motivational, emotional and identification base. Whether a student has been admitted as a four year student and is leaving home for the first time, or if the individual is a transfer student, CHANGE is a part of the process. Nancy K. Schlossberg's Transition Theory has put a cohesive framework to my student connection experiences. As a practitioner in the Higher Education field, unpacking Schlossberg's 4-S System of transition analysis and coping methods is an effective functional tool in creating a safe environment where students can feel valued and settle into a sense of belonging.
ABSTRACT (from the final paper for LEAD 490: Student Development Theory/Adult Learner entitled: 'Schlossberg's Transitional Theory with Student Development Application)
Schlossberg developed the 4-S System of analysis to aid in identifying the status and factors that influence the transition's process. This system is comprised of elements to evaluate the SITUATION (aspects affecting the transition), SELF (personal characteristics and the psychological resources), SUPPORT (evaluating types, functions and measurements of support) and STRATEGIES (coping resources) of the transition (Schlossberg, 2008).
